Hughes Company was founded in 1937 by Edgar H. Hughes. Some of the Company’s first work was leasing equipment to a WPA federal project in Scottsburg, Indiana, and they would continue to rent equipment until 1945. Around that same time, the Company started performing projects in the basement and sewer business. When Edgar became ill in 1946, one of his sons, George E. Hughes, Sr. took over the business with his mother and two brothers. The Company continued work on small sewer projects until 1950.
